Apple's announcements today surprised me a bit.   I'm surprised the iTunes mobile phone is such a complete and total yawner.  It's kind of ugly... and it's actually less capable than the smartphone that Motorola (yes, the same company) released 2+ years ago.  100 songs"  Come on.  I suppose the Apple brand gives it a coolness factor that'll help it sell... but this one is all marketing hype. 

"You can even pause the music when your phone rings, so you won?t miss any incoming calls."  Wow, really"  My 12-month old smartphone *even* does that too ;)   To be fair, I'm also surprised at how close to design perfection Apple has come with the iPod nano.  4GB and pencil-thin"  Are you kidding me"  Nothing can touch Apple right now when it comes to music hardware that makes your palms sweat.  Microsoft's hardware partners are constantly playing catch-up.  I still won't be picking one up; I dig my Zen Micro and WMA support is a requirement for me.  However, the iPod nano is seriously gorgeous. TubeTV 0.9.2 - A Flash converter with a browser preview
TubeTV combines two tools in one: a browser to search for videos on YouTube or Google Video, and a video converter. For best results, try not to use computer ports to charge your iPod.USB is especially sensitive to how many devices are on it and what theresulting bus voltage is. It may even display the charging icon butnot be adding much to the battery. USB versions prior to 2.0 will notcharge your iPod (and probably be too slow for its other functions).Even USB 2.0 is limited to 700 milliamps and the iPod "like" to seeone full amp for charging, plus some to spin the HD in the iPod whilemounted.

Some (early) iPod models will not charge from USB, period.Some PCs use 4-pin Firewire cables (all Macs are 6-pin) which carry nocharging voltage, so they won't work at all for recharging and canallow your iPod to run down and cause serious problems while updatingfirmware, restoring, or loading songs. Also note that earlier Firewire chargers can besafely used to charge new USB-only iPods. You'll need a special cable,however (about $10). Another possibility to consider is the battery meter is inaccurate,depending upon the model you have. Your iPod battery is probablyfine, fully charged, and ready to play for many hours.

For novice users, a good converter should have an option for automatically adjusting settings to achieve the best results. Excellent iPod converters can be found for around $40.00, and theyll do everything, and often more, than some of the more expensive programs. You can try and go the inexpensive route, using two or three free programs in combination (Videora, DVD Shrink, Handbrake, etc.), but I found that the free programs involved a large number of steps, produced mixed results, and wouldnt convert many new DVD movies (those produced over the past four years). Dont get me wrong, Im a thrifty guy, and if theres a cheap way to do things, Im usually on-board, but in this case, the hassle just wasnt worth it. The advantages offered by a good converting program far outweighed the trial and error hassles I found using outdated free programs.

Converting your DVD movies to play on an iPod allows one to watch their favorite movies and T.V. programs while on the bus or subway, on airplanes or long drives, or whenever you have a few free moments. DVD conversion software is getting more and more popular, as they facilitate the perfect transition from the big screen to the little screen.

Summary: While its now easy to rent DVD movies and some television programs from iTunes, why not have the best of both worlds? Using a DVD to iPod converter allows you to use iTunes and convert your DVD movies to play on your iPod. By converting your own DVD movies, youll find the quality is the same or better, the time to convert is shorter; and youll save a lot of money. Most importantly, you can keep your high quality DVD movies at home where you can play them, lend them, or sell them.
