Anyone who has ever worked around film and television production crews, actors and actresses, directors and producers knows the tangle of work that goes into packaging the final product for audiences. Work starts long before a sound stage or production site is chosen. Usually, it begins with a script that captures the attention of a producer or director.

"It can take me two years of outlining and planning before I write a single word," says Chuck Griffith, a feature filmmaker and founder of DCG Arts, an independent film marketing and production company. "I write up a treatment, register it at the WGA website [Writers Guild of America], and then float the ideas with contacts within the industry.  I've learned that you have to think 'how am I going to market this' before I devote up to five years writing the story, filming it, and then promoting it."

Amazon and other providers now offer services that let viewers rent or buy movies directly online, to be downloaded and watched right away.  While this is convenient, most of these services are still limited in what movies they can provide – and on top of that, the downloads, which are usually several gigabytes, take quite a while to get onto your computer.  There is an alternative to video on demand services like this, however: streaming movies.

Streaming movie sites let you watch pretty much any movie you want.  They have huge selections and it’s much easier to get access to movies that are more obscure or older films.  These sites pay royalty fees to movie providers and companies so that they can host this content, and they then make it available to anyone who signs up for their service.

Everybody has a list of films that they could watch time and time again and, though this list is different for everybody, it can be fun to compare your favourite films with friends and family - and maybe even convince them to change their own top movies by showing them a few of your own.

However, a top 10 list is never definitive as they're always subject to change with the more films you see. The great thing about top 10 movie lists is that they're fun to work on - after all, it means you get to sit down to take in some new movies and make the decision of whether they're good enough to push their way onto your list.
