Microsoft's famous cash reserves have significantly dropped according to a report. The $29 billion on-hand today are reportedly less than half of the cash and short-term investments held by the company about two years ago. It had as much as $64.4 billion by September 2004. It is the first time in more than five years that its cash balance has fallen short of $30 billion.

The software giant claims that the decline is a result of their plan to buy into smaller firms and reward shareholders. Colleen Healy, Microsoft's investor relations manager, said last week: "We're focused on striking the right balance between investing in the company's growth and returning capital to shareholders."

The report notes, however, that a possible cause of the drop may be that Microsoft has lost its appeal to the public as a company with a hot future, contrary to Apple, which has seen impressive growth even when its stock was decreasing. Ipod MoviesDownoad Ipod Movies

We Raised The Money!
We Did It! Drew posted on his blog today that we have officially raise all the funds required to get Drew an iPod photo 60 gig...not only that, but we went far and above the call. The iPod photo 60 with all the works like before can be found at Apple's site under the Sales section for $479 or $449 student price. After closing the site, Drew emailed me about someone who sent in $90 from a listener who hadn't donated yet.

I should of put a FINAL DAY post or something to pull in those last minute donations, but all that matters is that you found the way to get the funds to Drew. Then he posts this on his blog today: and then last night a super secret listener sent us $450!! so nick actually did pull it off with $720. i ordered the 60gb iPod photo this morning with the following engraving:

That Is Sooo Awesome! Thanks to the person who donated that much...that put us Waaay over the top. I mailed Drew a money order for the $180 we raised on the site, but with the money he got in the past 2 days he has raised enough to buy it on his own. Apple working on backlit trackpad, click-wheels?
A patent filed by Apple illustrates an "improved feedback mechanism for touch pads", "devices capable of illuminating the touch sensitive surface of the touch pad" and "methods for providing visual feedback at the touch pad." Through the patent, Apple describes the technology: "Although touch pads work well, improvements to their form feel and functionality are desired. By way of example, it may be desirable to provide visual stimuli at the touch pad so that a user can better operate the touch pad.

For example, the visual stimuli may be used (among other things) to alert a user when the touch pad is registering a touch, alert a user where the touch is occurring on the touch pad, provide feedback related to the touch event, indicate the state of the touch pad, and/or the like." A patent published last week suggested that Apple is working on ways to enable future iPhone and iPod models to share data wirelessly with iPhones and iPods.
