Get video on stream
Put Ipod Movies: APPLE TV is here, and it promises to change the way you enjoy video just as the iPod changed the way you enjoy music, wirelessly streaming content from your computer to your home-entertainment system. But with movies and TV shows not yet available in the Australian iTunes Store, it might not seem very useful.Sure, you can use the AppleTV device to stream home movies, podcasts, movie trailers, songs and music videos, but without movies and TV shows it kind of defeats the purpose of video-on-demand, doesn't it?Well, just because Apple won't sell you the content yet doesn't mean you can't take matters into your own hands.
While the AppleTV uses the same Front Row interface as Macs, it can't play the same range of formats as Front Row, as you can't install plug-ins on to it like you can with a Mac.
Bridge to a new world
Put Ipod Movies: AS media content stored or accessed on home computers increasingly intrudes on TV viewing habits, manufacturers are marketing devices to connect your computer to your TV. For Apple, that product is Apple TV.Let's first be clear of what the Apple TV (let's call it ATV) is not, which is an alternative to Windows Media Centre. There is no computer, keyboard or mouse in your lounge room. Neither is the ATV a digital video recorder. You can't program it to record shows. That's not what it's for. Here's what the ATV is: a network extender. It's designed to be a wireless bridge between your computer (Mac or PC) and your TV. And that, more or less, is it.
At least for now, that is. Last week, Apple announced a software update due this month that will enable ATV users to watch YouTube videos.
Put Skype on your dial
Put Ipod Movies: APPLE would have you believe that its iSight-iChat combination is the best for online video chat, just as iPod-iTunes is the best hardware-software combination for digital music. And they'd be right, if those you're chatting with also happened to be using iChat, AOL or Trillian. But that's often not the case, leaving Mac users at a disadvantage when they want to video-chat with buddies.Chat programs like MSN and Yahoo! Messenger have Mac versions, but do not yet fully support video chat.To the rescue has come Skype, not an instant-messaging service but a voice-over-IP provider (VOIP), that nevertheless has offered Mac users a cross-platform video-chat solution.
Using VOIP, Skype allows you to make phone calls between computers, landlines and mobiles, but also functions as an instant-messaging program.
