Parenting – Ice Age – LoveMovies! – Movie Match Author Diana Loomans

Theme: Parenting. Mix three Ice Age bachelor predators (a sloth, mammoth, and saber tooth) together. Add a human baby. Now, watch as all cope while returning the baby to its human tribe. The result? Laughter and inspirational lessons on family, parenting, and friendship.

Families these days are incredibly complex. There are parents, single parents, step-parents, gay parents, and no parents at all. For children struggling to understand what a family is, Ice Age provides gives its own positive spin. “That’s what you do in a herd, you look out for each other,” Manny the Mammoth tells Diego the Saber Tooth. Knowing how to look out for each other isn’t always easy. But, each of the main characters does his best and all prove themselves worthy in the end.

The characters are also bound together by their mutual interest in, and interaction with, the human baby. Sid rescues the baby and ropes Manny into helping him. Though Diego is mainly concerned with how the baby can become an eventual meal, he gradually changes his attitude. All three struggle to parent the baby along the way, much as parents struggle today. Though mistakes are made, successes happen too. Some of these successes are mirrored in the book, What All Children Want Their Parents To Know: 12 Keys to Raising a Happy Child, written by self-esteem and parenting expert, Diana Loomans.

Here’s a few of them.

Could your child be happier in your presence?

Then be sure to spend time together with laughter, play, and affection are a regular part of your day. Sid especially remembers the importance of this taking out necessary time to interact with, amuse, and delight the human baby he is protecting. In doing so he feeds the soul of the child, not simply the basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter.

Want your children to appreciate you more?

Then give acknowledgement and show them appreciation. In the film we watch Sid do this with the baby through consistent interaction and smiles. He is also models faith and positive optimism, so much so, he wins over not only the baby, but Manny and Diego in his determination to safely escort the baby home.

Need your children to acquire a good set of values?

Manny, though stodgy at times, shows a keen concern for others. “I don’t like animals that kill for pleasure,” he says early on in the film. He is also a good role model, using positive discipline with respect, helping the other characters stay on track and out of danger while they struggle to return the baby back home to his father.

Wish your children would do the right thing and be of service to others?

Sid is naturally inclined this way, always on the look out for how he can help. Manny needs a little prodding at times, but he always manages to come around. As for Diego? He is tempted to act in a negative way, but ultimately comes around and does the right thing in a very big way.

Like our children, none of the characters in the film are perfect. Sid can be a bit reckless. Manny at times is too pessimistic and role models what Loomans calls an unhealthy sense of humor in the form of put-downs and ridicule. “You have a very cruel sense of humor,” says Sid to Manny. Diego for the most part is full of deceit. Yet, each character redeems himself in the end.

Just as we allow our children to grow and make mistakes, which is another one of Loomans’ recommendations, parents can grow from their mistakes too (if we are secure enough to admit that we make them). Children notice and appreciate that as parents unconditionally accept and love themselves, they can genuinely offer the same towards their children.

Which perhaps explains why the Ice Age main characters have so much appeal. Their very human qualities give us hope. They also bring us laughter and the opportunity to spend time together as a “tribe” watching this film. This will help all of you warm your hearts. And, it will create an environment that may even help thaw out any “ice age” that exists amongst your family circle.
